Sourcing within Europe
Unlike fast fashion suppliers, we do not source new materials for every collection, but instead look specifically for durable, robust materials that we can use for a long period of time and for many product ranges. In order to guarantee the shortest possible transport routes and build long-term partnerships with our suppliers, we source almost exclusively in Europe and Turkey. This enables us to achieve short delivery times, good predictability for both sides and CO2 savings thanks to shorter transport routes.
All our products are made in Germany and 95% of our material suppliers are located in Europe. Our production partners and facilities are shown on the map. Most of our suppliers are in Tier 2, which means that they supply directly to our production in Hamburg (Tier 1). We maintain direct contacts with most of these suppliers, who for example manufacture the canvas, the metal parts, the zips, our Oleatex or other components. Tier 3 and 4 suppliers are raw material producers and partial suppliers who supply the tiers above them with individual parts. When selecting our partners within the supply chain, we pay attention to the highest quality. To ensure that the requirements are met, we regularly have samples of our materials analysed for harmful substances by an independent laboratory.
100% cotton canvas
We use canvas fabric as the main material for the majority of our product range. It is made from 100% natural cotton. The cotton is harvested in Turkey, cleaned, spun into threads, woven by the metre and dyed especially for us. The robust fabric is the basis of many of our products as it is extremely hard-wearing, easy to clean and natural. Thanks to the special Repellan® process, it is impregnated PFAS-free and is therefore water and dirt repellent despite its naturalness.
Currently, the cotton for our canvas is not of certified organic quality, as we have not yet been able to find a supplier who produces organic cotton in the grammage (= weight of the fabric per metre) that we need for our bags. However, we are still on the lookout and will change this as soon as we find a suitable supplier.
Oleatex - the vegan leather alternative
Oleatex® is made from leftovers from olive oil production and is a vegan leather alternative. Instead of animal components, olive pomade is used as a raw material, which remains after the extraction of the olive oil and can no longer be used in the food industry. This turns a waste product that would otherwise be disposed of into a recyclable, long-lasting material. While the majority of other vegan leather alternatives consist of 100% polyurethane (= plastic), Oleatex® only requires PU as a binding material with a share of approx. 30%, while biomass makes up 70% of the material. According to the producer Oleago, the production of Oleatex® causes up to 94% less CO2 emissions compared to cow leather.
High-quality metal parts and zippers
We always ensure the highest possible quality for all metal parts and zippers and work together with renowned experts. Our metal rivets and carabiners are cast especially for us and have a scratch-resistant finish. We source our zippers from the world market leader YKK in Japan.
Vegetable tanned leather
We only use vegetable-tanned leather, which we source from a tannery in Turkey that has been awarded the Leather Working Group Gold Seal. Unlike chrome tanning, the vegetable tanning process does not produce any environmentally harmful toxins. Thanks to the gentle treatment, the leather develops its very own natural patina over time.
Polyester/cotton lining
Most of the products in our portfolio currently still have an inner lining made of 100% polyester. We initially opted for this because it is water-repellent and therefore spilled liquids can simply be wiped out of the bags. In future, however, we would like to use natural materials for the inner lining wherever possible. Newer products such as the Oleatex handbags already use cotton. In future, we will gradually switch to a cotton-tencel mix.
Tear-resistant polyester yarn
We have chosen tear-resistant polyester thread for our sewing thread so that all bags and backpacks are as hard-wearing as possible and last a long time.
